Estuary - This review is from: Abide with Me (Paperback)
A surprising story of the friendship between two boys as they grow up in London's east end during the 70's and 80's. I would recommend this book without hesitation to anyone who enjoyed Nick Hornby or Tony Parsons, particulaly Man and Boy. The big difference is that Ian Ayris first novel delivers a much grittier story, one so evocative you will feel you have walked a mile in hero John Sissons shoes. The book is funny, thoughtful, touching and at times a unsettling.
Ian gives a 360 degree view of precisely what it was like to grow up in a decent working class household, taking that loving and carefree enviroment for granted, and how easy it is do drift through the years, and to wake one day in another life, as an outsider, the time passed, and the world you knew broken and gone.
