Film Noir, anyone?

I've just received a LoveFilm free 30 day wotsit through the post.  Being a bit skint at the moment, this seems an ideal opportunity to ask you fine people a question.  I want to get probably three noir films.

What, in your opinion, are the ones I should go seek?

  1. Chinatown, Night Of the Hunter, Nightmare Alley.

  2. M, Night of the Hunter and Angels with Dirty Faces. There is a scene in Night of the Hunter that is about the most sinister I have ever experienced!

  3. Touch of Evil, Gaslight, Mildred Pierce (and I'm talking Joan Crawford, not Kate Winslet!) Night of the Hunter is my all time fave.

  4. Bullitt, Touch of Evil, The Stranger (Welles take on what a Nazi is will raise the hair on the back of your neck!), Maltese Falcon, The Thin Man

  5. Detour (1946) is my abso fave. But also:

    Gun Crazy (original)

    Kansas City Confidential

    Get Carter, of course.

The Long Goodbye (major departure from Chandler's novel, but really works)

    Mildred Pierce

I could go on forever, but those are the titles that jump right out at me.

  6. DOA -- Edmond O'Brian. "I'd like to report a murder. Whose murder? Mine." Fats Domino is in the movie also and plays piano to boot.

  7. Blast of Silence. One of the lesser kmown noir films.

Made in 1961, written, directed and starred in by Allen Baron as 'baby boy' Frankie Bono. Without question, one the greatest noir films ever made.

  12. Thank you, Maria and Nigel. Blimey, that list is filling up fast. Santa will be busy this year. Must have a word with the kids, see if I can sneak a couple on their Christmas lists. I'm sure they won't mind.
